Me-Made-May 2014: Week 3

May 22, 2014

MMMay14-day21

Final art for the book is due next week, so I’m devoting every available nanosecond to painting for the next 8 days, which means that I punted all sewing for the interim. Unless my stress level reaches explosive proportions, in which case I will have to engage in some sewing therapy. I know that I was on my soapbox about how productive I’ve become with Evernote yesterday, but all I was able to do for today was to re-serge the bottom hem of what you see above (the threads have a tendency to snap and get unraveled). Oh well.

I find that one of the hardest things for me every day is deciding which shoes look the best with my handmade clothes. It’s a good thing I don’t wear any accessories, because the indecision would just force me to stay in pajamas every day.

Day 21 turned out to be slightly chilly in the morning, so I busted out my District 12 dress, and I tried 7 pairs of shoes and liked these three the best. Ultimately, I ended up with the boots on the left because they’re the most comfortable. By the end of the day, I was “glistening” and overheating in my tights, boots and long-sleeved knit dress.

As usual, my photography assistant couldn’t stand not being in front of the camera. And look how well she’s trained now; she instinctively covers her face. Of course, it looks like she’s saying “Ew Mommy, you stink,” but I appreciate her attempts.

I’m going strong with Me-Made-May and haven’t repeated a single garment (if you don’t count my jeans, which aren’t handmade so it doesn’t matter)! Here’s the recap from this past week — some of my absolute faves are in the bunch:

MMMay2014-days15to21

Day 15: Concert Tee

Day 16: Pink Stripey Knit Top

Day 17: Grey Tova

Day 18: Weekend Getaway Dress

Day 19: Yellow Silk Tunic

Day 20: Blue and Silver Tova

Day 21: District 12 Dress

Thanks for showing us how you style things. I love to see how others incorporate their handmade goodies in with regular clothes to make wonderful outfits!

I’m not sure I can call my outfits “styled” since I seem to be a one-trick pony with my outfit combos, but thank you, Kristi!

I thought all your footwear choices looked great, but I just love the shorter ones in the last photo! Super flexible in terms of styling too, I bet.
Love seeing these photos of your me-made this past week, and the pops of pink and yellow are such a nice nod to spring:) We will always love our grey, but the occasional color top is wonderful too! That pink shade especially looks great on you.

Thank you, Lucinda, those are my beloved Cydwoqs that I got on mega-sale!! It was a conscious decision to reach for tops with brighter colors because I noticed that my default mode is to reach for a neutral. I am learning a ton about myself through this Me-Made-May exercise!

Oh, my favorite district 12 dress! So nice to see that on you again – and with so many shoes 😉 Looks like you are having a pretty stylish may! ( And K too with those beautiful outfits you made for her!!) Exciting to hear that the book is so far along already, I hope all goes well with the final art work. Have a wonderful weekend! I am off to Poland for a bit of Taiji and for wearing and taking pictures of my pretty Anna dress…

Thank you, Ute! I had a good meeting with my editor today so everything seems to be on track with the book 🙂 Have a wonderful time in Poland and oh, I am so in love with your Anna dress, you’re going to look beautiful in it!

Love that dress, the colour blocking is very cool. By the way all three pairs of shoes look great!

Thanks Bella! I have way too many shoes and need to purge, I think!

I know this post is about the stuff you’ve made (which is all awesome, of course), but I love the sandals you’re wearing with the blue and silver Tovah.

Very exciting with your book. Can’t believe you’re blogging so regularly! Usually when I have things that *have* to get done, everything else goes to hell in a handbasket 🙂

    Best of luck to you!!

Ha, you should see the state of my house, Alana! Very un-pretty to say the least. Thanks for the encouragement, and yes, those black sandals rock. They’re so comfy!

Nice! I like the look of the serged hem – maybe should try that. And I vote for shoes number 2, in the middle. Though both the boots are nice too. I only wish it was warm enough where I live to be hot by the end of the day!

Thanks Nicole! I’m a big fan of the serged hem for sturdier knits 🙂 Hope the weather warms up in your neck of the woods soon!

When my daughter was a baby, oh, nearly two decade When my daughter was a baby, oh, nearly two decades ago, I read roughly a zillion board books to her. My favorites were Lucy Cousins’ Maisy series, Taro Gomi’s and anything with food. It’s with not a little awe and delight that I am creating my own baby board books these days. I adore my sumo books (I especially love seeing them in libraries), and I’m giddy with anticipation for GOOD NIGHT, NINJAS. Eight more weeks till publication! Preorder link is in bio 😊📘🥷I keep dreaming that these sumo and ninja baby books will become well-thumbed and beloved storytime staples…if you’ve been in the trenches of reading to babes and toddlers, do you have a favorite board book?
