KCW Spring – The End (part 1)

I’m a little bit ashamed that I have only one garment to show for the last couple of days of KCW. I’m doubly ashamed that it is an astonishingly simple tunic to make and should not have taken me so long. Have you seen Jessica’s prolific-ness? I had similar aspirations and didn’t even come close. Simply amazing! And all the clothes are fabulous!

But I toiled and it got done! And I think — if I may be so bold — this is very much my signature ‘look’. The loose, tunic-y style, the polka dots, an element of grey somewhere (the binding is cotton with grey stripes), a touch of sparkle (the dots are silver). The fabric is Nani Iro Pocho and it is divine.

This was the fastest photo shoot we’ve had to date. I got K up, she pulled on the tunic, I snapped a couple of test shots, pulled on the tights, and five minutes later we were done. I think it was due to this app/song (this is the YouTube version – warning: it’ll start playing and you might get funny looks). She loves it and is belting out the tune with abandon in these photos.

The tunic is from this book (love. this. so. much). I adore the little back bow tie detail and the flutter sleeves are a perennial favorite.

Alas, we had a situation right after the photo shoot. K was just about done with breakfast and we were about to head for school when she accidentally spilled a cup of milk all over the tunic. She was very upset and wailed, “But I really wanted to wear this to school!!” Travesty. But I was secretly pleased. Sometimes she only tolerates the clothes I make for the photos and then in a blink of an eye she’s wearing something else (that I didn’t make – which is getting harder and harder to do actually, which makes it sting all the more). She wore the Liberty-look dress instead with the linen coat, and that restored her spirits.

At any rate, I can stick a fork in KCW. I had a few more things I wanted to make that are actually cut out but not sewn, but you’ll get to see them in the coming weeks. Tomorrow, I’ll do a little wrap-up but for now, I’m going to let my sewing machine rest and get some housework done!

  1. Sigh. I’d love to feel some of that Nani Iro some day. It sounds like a dream to work with and the pattern/colors always seem so spot on. This teal color is fantastic – and paired with grey polka dots . . . it really couldn’t get any better:) Love that binding too – that last shot is great.
K has been a real trooper through all these KCW photo shoots, and we are grateful to her for being such a fun model:) I can’t believe you are lamenting your lack of production these past few days . . . are you kidding me? You could (and do!) sew circles around me. I’ve been in awe of what you have produced the past week – amazing additions to K’s already stunning wardrobe.

    1. What a compliment! It’s all about the fabric, I think – I could have made a tube top with this Nani Iro and I think it would have looked beautiful :-).

  2. You crazy, crazy woman. I thought yesterday was your last outfits and BAM! You had one more surprise. I agree, this is so “Sanae Style” and honestly, I can’t get enough of it. Awww… I can imagine how devastated K was to not wear the tunic, but with a wardrobe like hers, I’d be changing every hour!

    1. Man, I was feeling like I was a touch mental after I saw how many patterns I had traced and cut out. And so funny, K DOES change her outfit multiple times a day! She’s always been that way even before I started making clothes for her regularly!

  3. Damn girl, you’re good! This is so cute I think any girl would choose it over something from a store. I’ve never sewn with Nani…. ::::cowering:::::

    1. Thanks girl! Nani Iro comes in all sorts of fabric types and this one is a cotton and is not that different from AMH, I’d say. The double-gauze like the Peaceful Cooing (the cloud puffs print) is the softest thing your machine will ever touch…

  4. Beautiful! Turquoise is a favorite color for me, adding the dots and the stripes of the bias, it is very nice and lovely. Congratulations! you where very prolific this week (I only manage to make two), I did love every outfit you made!

    1. Thank you, Ashley! Oh my goodness, you’ve been productive haven’t you? Amazingly beautiful clothes that you made!

    1. That is the BEST comment ever. I am all about the Japanese and French aesthetic. Would that make me a Japanrenchile? A Franconeseac?

  5. this tunic has it all really- colour, dots, stripes and sparkle, plus being pretty and also comfortable, no wonder she was disappointed when she couldn’t wear it!

    1. I felt so bad for K! Somehow “no use crying over spilt milk” was not the appropriate thing to say…why am I referencing so many idioms today?? P.S. your fabric package is on its way!!

  6. you are seriously super, if i may say that. i love the “collection.” thanks for the very inspiring post. i got four things done-a lot for me, and a bit of hand sewing and i am really happy with myself too.

    1. Ooh, love the word ‘super’! What makes KCW great is that there are no real strict rules and that it’s about having fun sewing 🙂 Bravo for outcomes that make us happy!

  7. Super cute! Is this with the brushed cotton? I am searching the internet to see if anyone has used the brushed cotton pocho for clothing. I have used a bit for a cowl and it feels divine.

    1. Hi Crystal! Yes, this is the brushed cotton and the fabric is great for this dress/tunic. K wears it a lot!
