Happy Friday + Randomness

vancouver-sketch

Happy Friday! So, we’re getting out of town and heading to Vancouver next week! K’s friend is visiting from Guatemala and on the spur-of-the-moment, we booked tickets for Amtrak plus an Air BNB, and off we go on an all-girls’ trip to Canada. One senior citizen, one middle-aged mama and two tweens. This should be interesting. We’re all about the same age mentally, so it’s going to be a blast. Due to the crazy number of things going on, we can only stay for a couple of days which means we won’t be able to hit the Harrison Hot Springs, but the place we’re staying in (Yaletown) has a pool and sauna. Fabulous.

We’ll explore Granville and fabric stores and if anyone has recommendations/suggestions, I’d love to hear! We’re looking for some good restaurants in or near downtown.

With travel and party/launch prep, etc. I’m scaling back a little and will post on Tuesdays and Thursdays for the next couple of weeks, but I’ll do my best to make them extra fun posts. Happy, happy weekend everyone!

The house elves won’t stop
‘Lectric crisis and the like*
How to appease them?

*We are now experiencing electrical problemos and I keep finding baffling new ways in which the house can fall apart and other oddness. Who knew that bees would be in our lighting fixtures? I’m ready for a vacation!

  1. For fabric shops downtown, you have to check out Dressew. It’s on the border of the dodgy area and only accepts cash/debit but it’s well worth a stop in. There are a couple of other places close by, too — Atex fabrics is right across the street and Button Button is around the corner. Have fun!

    1. Dressew was AMAZING! My mom was so happy and got a bunch of things. We didn’t get a chance to check out Atex and Button Button, but next time!! Thank you, Mel!

  2. Dressew is well worth the visit – and definitely go downstairs for amazing zippers. Prices are really good and it is walkable from Yaletown. It is on the edge of the Downtown Eastside but totally fine during the day.
Sewaholic posted a review of Vancouver fabric stores awhile back – maybe a year?
Ironically, we are travelling your way this weekend (near Redmond) from the southern interior of BC so I will be looking for some good fabric stores there.

    1. I was in zipper heaven at Dressew! I’m not familiar with fabric stores on the Eastside, but I hope you got a chance to check out Drygoods Design at the very least, Rena! It’s a wonderful store. 🙂

    1. We had so much fun in the brief time we got to spend in Vancouver — we’re definitely going back! I love your round-up of fabric stores and we hope to check out even more next time. Thank you, Kristi!

    1. Weird! The bees were all dead in our lighting fixtures, but I’m so curious as to how they even got up there! We had a lovely time in Vancouver — now it seems like eons ago! Thank you, Great. 🙂

  3. Oh Sanae! I’m so glad you’re making a trip up to Vancouver. If I remember correctly, it’s your first? I hope the weather cooperates with your visit as that can really influence the enjoyment. Hopefully you’ll be able to squeeze in a visit to Stanley Park and walk along the Seawall a bit:)
One of my favorite places to visit when we lived in Vancouver was Granville Island. At the time I was into papercrafting and took some bookbinding classes there. But on our recent trip (almost two years ago already . . . not so recent I guess!), I found Maiwa Textiles which I think you’ll really enjoy. I bought some India printed fabric pieces which are still languishing on my shelf because I love them too much to actually use! And try some Bumbleberry Pie in the market if you can . . . it’s in the very back of the marketplace and worth every calorie:)
Hope you and your mom have a lovely visit with K and her friend!. I’m eager to hear how it goes:)

    1. I wasn’t able to find Bumbleberry Pie at Granville but I LOVED Maiwa Textiles. So, so fabulous. All the indigo dyeing goodness and luscious products the sweetest people at the shop! We walked a bit along the Seawall and ate some seriously good sushi, so the short trip was a big success!! Thank you for the recommendations, Lucinda!

  4. Saw this post too late to help, but I hope that your trip to BC was wonderful. Would love to hear what you found on your trip. Not that this could have helped you on the train, we always make a pit stop in Richmond on our way to/ from Seattle. Fabricana is happily close to many ramen shops, perfect for a break for a mom who wants to fabric shop and a weary, hungry family.
