Sewing for Me: The Sumo Wrestler Top

February 20, 2014

I had such high hopes for this top. It's from this book, and you can see how stylish it looks when professionally photographed below - I've shared this image before, and it got pinned like crazy. It's clearly a cute garment, but I'm guessing you can't have curves to pull off this look. The curves, oh the curves. They are accentuated in a way that I can't say is flattering. Hence the name of the post. So let's talk details: the fabric I used is a shot cotton, I believe. I've had it for ... Read more

Sewing for Me (sort of): Take Three

February 6, 2014

I'm having all sorts of server issues again. As a result, I've been dealing with tech support, and I'm incredibly sad that I seem to have lost a few comments - so sorry! Things have been wonky in general, so I'm playing catch up with responding to comments and fixing some backend stuff. It's Murphy's law, because I actually had posts prepared early in advance this week, which is something that never happens. Poof, they went, up into the ether. It turns out that procrastination is a handy trait ... Read more

Sewing for Me: Yellow Silk Tunic

January 30, 2014

Being of Asian descent, I've always taken it as gospel that I can't wear the color yellow because the natural undertones of my skin would shine like a beacon and make me look jaundiced. I'm sure it was from some random Seventeen magazine or some such I read when I was about 10. I can count on one hand the number of times I've worn this sunny hue near my face (t-shirts for school events come to mind). So I was hesitant to sew with this SILK (need to capitalize that - if you've been around ... Read more

Happy Friday + Randomness (+ An Unscheduled Sewing for Me Rendition)

January 24, 2014

Happy Friday! Old habits die hard, and I did sew something for myself this week, spurred by the need to create a sample for a class I'm teaching next month. I'm going to be frank -- initially I wasn't crazy about this dress once I sewed it up in this khaki linen-blend (I might have mentioned that I planned to create a slipcover with this fabric, so it's a touch on the heavier side and I have yards and yards and yards of the stuff). I thought, "Oh no! What I have I done? I chose an awful dress to ... Read more

Sewing for Me: Vogue 8511

January 16, 2014

So I initially planned on ranting about what an absolute failure this dress was. Then M saw me in it, and made googly eyes, and when I hear words like "Wow, that looks like something from Mad Men!"...Well, I had to revise my plan. It has a lot going for it, this Vogue 8511 dress. I like the grey. Of course I do. It has a bit of shimmer, and could potentially rise to a party occasion if paired with some sparkly accessories. The fabric is maybe some kind of suiting? There's a good amount of ... Read more
