A crafty little atelier in a grey city

Giveaway! Retro Fabrics + Lotta Prints [CLOSED]

May 29, 2013

And the giveaways keep on coming! I have about a yard left over of the adorable orange polka dot print that I used for this dress, and have a feeling that you might like it… I’m also throwing in about a yard of Oliver + S “City Weekend” fabric, which is the perfect complement to the polka dot for that uber retro vibe, no? Both are 100% cotton.

And for you fellow crafty types, I have the lovely Lotta Jansdotter book that is full of fun ideas. With Father’s day coming up, wouldn’t it be cool to stencil a handmade tie? The stencils are all intact and unused – this is a great book and I’m a huge Lotta fan. However, this is one of those books that looks so pretty on my shelf but hasn’t gotten much (any) use.

To enter the giveaway, please leave a comment with a unique talent that you have. For example, not many people know this about me, but I’m a whiz with mysteries and can almost always figure out who did it right away, be it movies or books. I am also the record holder of the lowest karaoke score in the city of Matsusaka, Japan. Totally tone deaf, I am. Obviously, my criteria for a unique talent is quite far-reaching.

So have at it! I will leave the giveaway open until next Thursday, June 6th, 5pm, and I will announce the winner the next day. As always, I’m happy to ship internationally. Good luck!

P.S. Liz, who won the giveaway a while ago, sent me a pix of the cutest pair of pants made out of the fabric she won. It made me so happy! Look at these adorable robot pants:

I am an expert double bass player! My day job is playing in a symphony orchestra. Not unique among my work colleagues but perhaps unique in the sewing world? Great giveaway.

What a lovely giveaway. Thank you! My unique talent… Going overboard buying stuff for with every hobby I have, like baking, sewing, card making, shoe collecting, cardmaking and at the moment, possibly knitting. Luckily, its complimentary talent called “finding storage space for yet another _____” (insert item such as sewing apparatus, pair of shoes, bulky kitchen appliance etc) is also one of the things I am rather good at!

    Hi Sanae!
My unique talent is to get lost, even with a map!
Thank you for this amazing giveaway!

My unique talent is being able to read lots of books and not remember what happens. The downside- rereading and not realizing that I already read the book. The ending will sound vaguely familiar and then it starts to come back to me.

I can turn any song into a song about my cat at the drop of a hat. My current face us the one I sing in the tune of the scooby doo song.

love the fabric, but uh oh, i’m so hard pressed to think of a unique talent i have…. would have to be something related to being able to create recipes after trying something new at a restaurant or friends house, just guessing what might create those flavors and textures. i usually get pretty close to what i’m going after. that, or my amazing talent to ignore anything annoying that gets in the way of being spaced out and happy. Mounting bills? Dirt on the floor? Oh, la dee da….

Wow gorgeous fabric and a fun book!! My tais that I can lift one corner of my lip up towards the top if my face; however, the other side can’t do that. Elvis-like lip curl

That fabric is awesome! I can think of many things to do with it and I would also love the stencils! I do have a unique talent… Finding four leaf clovers!! Seriously, I can glance at a patch of clover and find one, just like that! Weird, I know 🙂

I have two talents! I can tardis pack anything, shopping won’t fit in the fridge or freezer? I’m the girl for the job! I can also make up lyrics whilst singing to an existing tune. I quite often do this when sitting in traffic jams or wanting to embarrass my kids :). Who doesn’t love a give away? Especially for something I couldn’t find where I am!

I love these giveaways! I am a decent flamenco dancer and a slightly better than okay synchronized swimmer, both extremely valuable talents in day to day life 😉

Thanks for the great give away. My secret talent is that since I started practicing yoga I can do a full split for the first time in my life. Shh, don’t tell anyone because then people on the street will come up and ask me to do one and it just gets sooo embarrassing.

    May 29, 2013 at 7:50 am

hmmm. i already have that book, but would love the fabric! i guess my unique talent would be vegan baking…ever since i met my husband (who is vegan) about eight years ago, i’ve barely baked anything with eggs or dairy and i love it! people think it’s hard to make delicious vegan baked but really it’s not.

    Great giveaway !
I love the retro dress you made with the polka dot fabric, but I actually like all your creations 😉
    Love your sense of style.
My unique talent…. Does being a full time mom count ?
I home school my daughter so we spend 100% of our time together, which is amazing !!!
Thank’s for your wonderful blog !

    An irresistible giveaway! Thank you!
I make awesome granola. I can’t think of anything else that unique right now, except I’m middle-aged now and can do a great cartwheel.

Awww….LOVE the robot pants! Hmmm…my secret talent would have to be replicating make-up tutorials I find on the internet, which is funny since most days I’m lucky to apply moisturizer and stay in my pajamas. The best is when I do up a dramatic smokey eye and stay in the pj’s. It’s a lovely look 🙂

Got a couple of unique talents – remembering phone numbers, very handy, and hula-hooping! Can hoop for an hour non-stop, if I ever, ever get a spare hour!

    May 29, 2013 at 8:36 am

Great give away! My secret talent is balancing a spoon on my nose just like when I was a kid – my children are very impressed.

  19. Ute

    May 29, 2013 at 8:38 am

Your giveaways are great! I am really good a “googling” (how do you spell that?!) things, I always find the relevant information pretty quickly! And song lyrics just find their way into my brain and get stuck there! I can sing along so many songs and sometimes it is quite compulsive, I don´t even notice I am doing it! A lot of times I find myself singing songs to me in my head, and when I become aware of it, the lyrics always match my mood!

  20. Nicole Watkinson

    May 29, 2013 at 8:40 am

Wow I love that O+S fabric and that book looks inspiring.

My unique talent would have to be my ability to design. I have always been able to draw and started winning competitions at an early age. I think I’m quite good at visualising how things will turn out, using colour well and and achieving an eye catching finished product – this trqnslates to art and sewing and I tend to be deemed a “natural” at most arty things I try my hand at.

  21. Jams

    May 29, 2013 at 9:11 am

    Love this!

My secret super talent seems to be figuring out surprises (usually birthday, anniversary gifts and plans) from my husband. It used to be a game I played willingly. But now I usually figure out his plans by accident!

I am curious if you have a fabric buying strategy. I always struggle with knowing how much fabric to buy when I find something I love. I usually err on the side of too little, but I can’t get over being cheap.

  22. M

    May 29, 2013 at 9:28 am

My unique talent is to spot and sense whether a particular restaurant has yummy food or not!:D my friends are always happy with the restaurant I chose (or are they just being polite? Lol I hope not!)

    May 29, 2013 at 9:45 am

My husband will mention he can’t find something and I’ll respond it’s in the closet, second shelf, left hand side, because I saw it there 2 months ago. Selective photographic memory that never helped me in school or otherwise:)

  24. Amy

    May 29, 2013 at 10:22 am

This is amazing! Most people who know me don’t know that I did improv for a few years in high school and I feel like it’s sharpened my brain. Although my two kids have probably eroded whatever quick wittedness I may have boasted.

    I make wicked goat noise.

    May 29, 2013 at 10:53 am

love the giveaway! i have an uncanny ‘ability’ to estimate time. like if i set a timer for 10 mins or an hour i’ll go check whatever is cooking about 5 seconds before the timer goes off. happens almost every time!! so i’m calling it a talent 🙂

  27. Lauren aka Giddy99

    May 29, 2013 at 11:30 am

I’m actually pretty good at singing, but hardly ever will in front of other people (it requires a couple of drinks and I don’t drink anymore). 🙂

  28. Marina

    May 29, 2013 at 12:36 pm

I can remember pretty much any number because numbers correspond to different colors to me. Maybe this developed when I was a child as a way for me to cope with math?

  29. Rossella

    May 29, 2013 at 12:42 pm

Mmm, my secret talent is to be really really patient. Maybe my three kids trained me a lot 😉

  30. Adri H.

    May 29, 2013 at 12:45 pm

Nice secret talent! I love mystery books too, but I’m not always the best at figuring out who the culprit is. My secret talent is that I do Irish Dance… hard shoes and all. 😉

  31. Katie

    May 29, 2013 at 12:50 pm

    Lovely fabric!

My secret talent is untying knots. Seriously, I have never met a knot that I couldn’t untie. Knots in jewelry chains are my particular specialty. Once when I was in college (WAAAY pre-kids), a classmate with kids told me that I should be an honorary mom when I untied a knot in about 5 minutes that had dumbfounded her for over a week.

And I have a knack for remembering random numbers. Not doing math, which might actually be productive, but just remembering numbers and combinations of numbers.

  32. Meghan

    May 29, 2013 at 2:31 pm

What a great give away! I just love that fabric! As far as a talent, I can raise just my left eyebrow up while my right eyebrow stays in place. Not really something that won me any talent contests but its a neat trick to entertain kids with lol

  33. ashley

    May 29, 2013 at 2:36 pm

nice loot! i love her designs and didn’t realize she had a book out to this effect. speaking of ties, both of those fabrics would look great as bow ties, but you have to be either really cool or really goofy to successfully pull off that look. unique talent…hm. i have a very uncommon memory for unimportant details. i can see a movie once and have probably 80% of the dialogue memorized. somehow, i have never been able to parlay this gift into say, exam performance.

    Thanks for yout incredible blog!!!!

    May 29, 2013 at 4:12 pm

Unique talent? I can always tell if my four year old is lying!

I’ve convinced her that when she lies there are spots on her tongue. So if I ever think that she may be telling a little fib I ask to see her tongue – if she’s lying I only get to see the tip, if she’d telling the truth she sticks it out as far as she can. Only problem is she now automatically sticks her tongue right out when she says something a little unbelievable that’s true (without me asking) I just hope that she doesn’t do this in school as they might think that she’s a little strange!

I love your giveaways– what a great question!

Umm, I can lick my elbow.
A more useful skill perhaps, I can also remove any sticker. You know those awful destructive price stickers some stores put on their merchandise? Don’t stand a chance against me!

    May 29, 2013 at 5:03 pm

I can use my hands as a train whistle. It took a lot of practice to learn to do it. the kids are fascinated by it. fun!

  39. karmela

    May 29, 2013 at 5:45 pm

Such great talents in the comments! I would have to say that mine involves the ability to make big plans and run out of time before getting to half of my grand plans! Maybe that’s not a talent. OK…I can say “cilantro” and make it sound really cool. I say it in Spanish (same word different pronunciation) whether I’m speaking Spanish or English.

    May 29, 2013 at 7:37 pm

Fantastic giveaway, I’ve thought about buying that book in the past so here’s hoping….As for a unique talent, hmm, not unique but have become a fairly good multi-tasker since my second baby was born. Also discovered a couple of weekends ago I am freakishly strong now when my husband and I moved a piano which took four removal guys to bring it to our house!

Just discovered your blog a few weeks ago, your sewing is just wonderful, your daughter is a lucky girl!

I have got the unique talent of banging the car twice at the same place, i did it just yesterday… I’m not sure i wrote it right (i’m french)…

    May 29, 2013 at 9:05 pm

I love so much your sewing projects. I have many japanese books but have not done a project from them yet. One thing most people don’t know about me is that I can fold my tongue in two and leave it that way for a few seconds. It is a genetic trait that is rare.

  43. --anu

    May 29, 2013 at 10:30 pm

It took me a day to come up with it but I am really good at doing nothing. I can spend great lengths of time totally unoccupied. It might seem like nothing but I have noticed that most people can’t even if they try. I can also sew or make pretty much any toy that comes to mind. Once I made a set of Egyptian figures out of wire and felt complete with crocodile heads and crazy golden masks.

    May 30, 2013 at 12:01 am

Nice giveaway, Sanae! Hard to resist the polka-dots… I have to say that none of my talents have got me anywhere career-wise, but I am especially good at finding small lost things. I’m also the proud owner of a ‘Lego Master Builder’s Certificate’ which I got in a lego-building competition some thirty-three years ago, an achievement I often boast about to my children 🙂

    May 30, 2013 at 12:16 am

Wonderful giveaway! I am a good listener, always listening to people and offering advice.

  46. Alexandra P.

    May 30, 2013 at 12:18 am

I’m very good at map reading, we never get lost and don’t need a gps. (People say that’s rather rare for women). I am also rather good at drawing cute toddlers (which I do for a living now, isn’t that great?!) I also have a photografic memory to find things that are lost, but for some reason I can not remember names nor faces, which is often embarrassing.
    Thanks for the great give-away!

  47. Jess Z

    May 30, 2013 at 8:52 am

Not sure if writing essays and editorials a couple hours before they’re due is a talent, but my best work occurs when I have about two hours to turn it in. I will think and research weeks, often months ahead, but it’s those final hours that force me to focus and submit my best quality work. I also remember dates, numbers and such- even locker combinations from when I was in school several years back.

Thanks for hosting the giveaway! 🙂

  48. Asmita

    May 30, 2013 at 9:01 am

Umm umm…this is a hard one. Ok, so one of my talents is that I can speak 6 languages! Ok, truthfully, I can really speak for 5 of them, and manage in one more. Does that count? I am sure there are plenty of people who can do the same….
But I can’t resist your giveaways and Lotta. well…the fabric is lovely for starters and you ship internationally….:-)

  49. Claudette

    May 30, 2013 at 9:22 am

    Hmmm…so many unique talents above!
I can retell almost any story and make it funny. Does little for me in real life but I’m a hit at parties and boring staff meetings 🙂
    Thanks for the great giveaway.

  50. Emily kidd

    May 30, 2013 at 10:47 am

Thanks for the giveaway! I can make realistic horse noises

  51. Kristi Andres

    May 30, 2013 at 11:54 am

Oh, I would love to win more fabric! 🙂 My unique talent is that even though I am a blond gringa I speak pretty good Spanish.

  52. Maria

    May 30, 2013 at 12:19 pm

Love this giveaway Sanae! thanks!. OK, this could sound weird and that is why very few people around me know it (although I’m just to reveal it on the internet :P): I can have premonitory dreams. Sometime events happen exactly as I dreamed them, sometimes just parts of them. Creepy, isn’t?

  56. Laura

    May 31, 2013 at 3:04 am

What a lovely giveaway!! As for talents, I’m very good at wrapping presents and folding pants- does that count?…

  57. Kristie

    May 31, 2013 at 7:15 am

I have great willpower. I’ve had to make some dietary changes (no alcohol while pregnant, no milk while nursing, no gluten after the celiac diagnosis) and I have never had a problem with cheating. I also decided to take up running a year ago and have been running 3 or more times a week since. I’m running my 3rd half marathon next month. I suppose it doesn’t carry over into all aspects of my life – I still get impatient and frustrated with my kids, but I’m pretty good about doing something once I set my mind to it. Thanks!

  58. gail

    May 31, 2013 at 8:23 am

you are so generous with your giveaways! my unique talent is that i can tell you the capital to almost any country…because i memorized them out of boredom in my 20s…why, i don’t know. but there you have it!

  59. Lia Z

    May 31, 2013 at 4:15 pm

I’m extraordinary good at directions. I basically never get lost. Also I’m pretty good at picking the right fruit at the market and when my hair is way overdue for a wash but I can’t because nobody is here to watch the Baby (or because I’m to lazy) I can conceal the greasy hair with some fantastic tricks. Thats one of my most useful talents. 🙂
    Love the fabrics!!!!

  60. Katie

    May 31, 2013 at 7:01 pm

My hidden talent is the ability to stack massive amounts of books in tiny spaces- I know, this doesn’t seem like a great feat, but believe me it comes in handy 😉

  61. Irene

    June 1, 2013 at 12:31 am

Ooh, I love Lotta Jansdotter–nice giveaway! I’m good at making up bedtime stories. Really good. So good that I forget the one I told the previous night and will try to retell it the next night, thinking it is fresh and funny… until I get busted by my daughter.

  62. Fiona

    June 1, 2013 at 6:27 am

I can pick things up with my toes, a skill honed mainly because I was too lazy to bend over to reach for stuff I’d dropped on the floor! Does that count as a hidden talent?!

  63. Kimberly F

    June 1, 2013 at 8:36 am

I have a talent for packing. I can fit more in a suitcase than I should ever really be taking with me!

  64. laney

    June 2, 2013 at 3:05 pm

    Hey Sanae,
My unique talent is being able to smear chocolate all over my face EVERY single time I eat icecream..seriously.. even when I am REALLY trying to be neat. Fantastic example for my 1 yr old..I know. Thanks for the giveaway!

  65. Piapia

    June 2, 2013 at 9:18 pm

I can clap with one hand. I can flip my fingers to clap the palm of the same hand. I think it’s a hoot. My husband thinks it’s freaky. The only other person I know who can do this is my look-a-like brother. Can’t whistle or sing a tune to save my life, but I can clap one handed.

  66. Senna

    June 3, 2013 at 8:49 pm

I’ve always been very organized. In first grade, I got in trouble for organizing my crayons by color instead of listening to the teacher. Little did she know, I am also a great multi-tasked! I heard everything she said.

  67. Marjie High

    June 5, 2013 at 8:38 am

So despite the fact that I am not that great at remembering things in general, my unique talent is that I remember where almost every single thing is in my house. We’re talking random camping supplies, old tools and last season’s kid clothes. It’s like my brain had a road map for the stuff when it comes to the place where I live. It’s nice, but kind of irritating when my husband doesn’t believe me and goes to check… Guess who’s always right?

Happy Thanksgiving to you and all your loved ones! Happy Thanksgiving to you and all your loved ones! I’m spending time with family in the Midwest and there is much to be grateful for, not the least of which is the slower pace this week. Sending big hugs to you! 🧡🧡🧡🧡 Incidentally, this ikebana floral arrangement is one of the illustrations that didn’t make it into my book SHIBUI — I painted a lot of extra illos!
