Valentine’s Word Search

For some reason, K’s school hasn’t allowed Valentine’s exchanges in past years. This has been hugely disappointing for me because I LOVE making Valentine’s. As with any holiday involving cards and sweets, I get completely jazzed while K looks on with a jaded expression, resigning herself to yet another craft project gone bonkers.

This year, still inexplicably, her school is allowing its first ever Valentine’s exchange. I am beyond excited. I created this word search card, thinking it would be perfect for second graders. K nixed it, unfortunately, saying that it’s too easy. Perhaps you’d like it for your less opinionated kiddos? There are four per page with fourteen words to be hunted down. Initially I wanted to include vintage-looking pencils (something similar to those tiny pencils you get at IKEA, but cuter) but I couldn’t find any locally. These small markers were $2 per 10-pack, making them easy on the wallet. That’s gold washi tape, but I should use something with a little more pizzaz/pattern.

Here’s what they look like on the sheet, and there’s a convenient download button below.

So I’m back to square one. K loves the bookmarks, but wants them to be less lovey-dovey. We’ll probably just end up stamping a bunch. I don’t have time for it this year, but next time I may just revisit the scratch-off idea. That was fun! We also did some potato stamping a long time ago, and that was fantastic too:

How about you? Are you getting V-day cards ready?

  1. Well, this is just perfect! On fridays I work as a socialworker, mentoring a group of girls, and I will give them your word search cards for Valentine´s day! It will be a great English practice for them! Thank you a lot! I will also be using your lovely bookmarks! (My faorite is the one with the e.e.cummings quote.)

    1. Of course you’re a mentor for girls – that’s just how wonderful you are, Ute. And I love that this would make good English practice. Hooray!

    1. What a great idea to do multiple Valentine’s Day crafts. It’s becoming more and more apparent that K did not inherit my enthusiasm for crafting. She did choose the fonts for the word search, so that’s something 🙂

  2. I like the word search cards! One year, we did red-cellophane-secret-message cards which was a big hit at preschool. We should try that again in elementary school. Anything hand made is so much better than purchased valentines, I think. It doesn’t have to be fancy or expensive, just that the kids had a hand in making it.

    1. Oh, I love that! I want to know more – how does the secret message part work? I’m a big fan of handmades too, though obviously, I tend to take over…;-)

  3. Actually inspired by your Valentine bookmarks my nine year old made up her old bookmarks with clip art and words in publisher. We’re going to use them! 🙂 I made 25 embellished tea towels for the moms in the group.

  4. How sweet! Thanks for the inspiration – I’d made a little something for my daughter but it was a bit too feminine for my son, so now I’ve made a valentine’s word search for him.

  5. You are my hero of the day. I printed these babies off on cardstock for our party today, picked up cute valentine pens and pencils on the way… (too busy being approved for our adoption over here for serious valentining!). You sure blessed me today, so thank you! You are very generous.

    1. So glad they came in handy! K gave the kaibosh on them, so I promised to make a harder word search for next year and designed more bookmarks instead! I’ll share those tomorrow 🙂 and good luck with the adoption process!!

  6. I guess great minds think alike, only read this post now and was involved in very similar potato stamping yesterday! We stamped a pillow case, for Valentine, it’s in my “Blue Valentine” post on my blog. M hadn’t done any potato stamping ever before, so she was thrilled! 🙂
