Bouclé Coat Dress

November 5, 2012

Good morning – I hope you had a nice weekend! It was a typically grey-weathered one for us, but it was cozy and comforting. And I am creating garments to suit the weather…

Slowly but surely, I am making every single pattern from this book. I can’t recommend it highly enough! This time, I sewed up a coat dress. It’s definitely vintage inspired, and I think it’s rather stylish.

I had this bluish-grey bouclé fabric from here, and thought it would be a good fit with the pattern. It was actually sort of a nightmare to sew with due to all the fraying, but I’m pleased with the results. It’s a thick, wool-ish looking material, but I believe it’s (gasp) polyester.

The neckline was a little lower than I expected, so K is wearing the Ooh La La dress underneath. The scarf is a beautiful silk from my mom. I have a bit of a scarf obsession.

I agonized over the buttons and was actually planning on using these matte gold ones for a military-esque jacket, but I really like how they look on the coat.

The pockets and part of the facing is an aquamarine corduroy (I am working on a project with this corduroy – to be shared soon!).

K likes it too. That blanket is handmade by my talented mom. It’s so lovely.

Thanks Amy! It’s really a fantastic book. I’ve learned a bunch of new techniques from it.

You simply amaze me! I’ve picked up that particular pattern book a few times in the bookstore, but was never as inspired by it as I am by your blog! Now, of course, it seems to me that I must have it! I am loving your posts as you work your way through the book. This coat, like everything else, is so stunning! Well done:)

Beautiful! UGH… I’m just waiting for Lala to get a little bigger so I can start sewing some stuff from that book. I could resize the patterns, but I’m too lazy. You keep making lovely things and I just might break down and do it…

    Great work, Sanae.

The word that incites terror in most newbie sewing The word that incites terror in most newbie sewing enthusiasts: zippers. Now that I have a few years of sewing under my belt I’m less cowed by them, but there’s something about long, separating zippers that still makes me nervous. I powered through, however, and made this versatile twill hooded jacket originating from a @patterncouture_ zip-up hoodie pattern meant for knit fabrics that I modified a lot. I blogged about it! Link in bio if you’d like to see the different versions I created.
