Fall Sewing Plans

Remember my vacation wardrobe sketch? I had forgotten that I doodled my plans for fall sewing at the end of summer, and I found it in one of my sketchbooks yesterday. I’ve done pretty well so far…I made the Clover pants and a dolman-sleeved top, A tunic tee, a plaid Tova (though it’s not a button down), a long-sleeve dress. A lot of blacks, greys, navys, but no surprise there, right?

I’m thinking a motorcycle jacket is rather ambitious and unrealistic (and maybe even out of character?) and I’d rather try a military-style jacket, but I might be able to get those knit cardigans sewn up soon. I also really want to make a proper button-down shirt. I have a great, fitted one from J. Crew that I wear all the time. Any good recommendations for a fitted button down would be much appreciated!

Anyway, I wanted to post this so I wouldn’t forget my loose guidelines for fall sewing. Do you make sewing plans too? And do you follow them? I usually sew based on how I’m feeling at the moment so I often meander and forget about my list of clothes to sew…

  1. I love your sketches! And I am looking forward to seeing how they will look in fabric. Especially the cardi, I have not found a pattern I like yet. Which one will you use? I usually have a general idea of what I want to make, but I also love just following a very urgent sewing “need”, and then I have to make it RIGHT NOW :-). As for a button down shirt, I plan on making the Archer, I already have it printed out. It is not too fitted, but I think you can easily change that. There is a sew-along for it and the instructions are very good.

    1. Thanks Ute! I have several patterns for knit cardis: McCalls 5241, Butterick 5394, Simplicity 1961 and Vogue 1020. Not sure which one I’ll try… I’m also pretty sure I’ve seen some patterns in Burda and Ottobre that I’ll search out. I’ve seen quite a few cute Archers around the interwebs and it looks like a good one to try!

  2. not that i have sewed any shirts as yet but i keep looking at the archer shirt that kelli of true bias has made and it looks really good.

  3. Your sketches are fantastic! it is so nice to see your plan for fall sewing, all those pieces look very exciting. I’m already very impressed with your clover pants. I wish i could be that organized, but some times I just procrastinate too much…the rest of the time is just life getting in the middle. In this side of the planet, no plans for fall sewing :(.

    1. Life does get hectic! It took me months to make the a Clover pants, mostly due to procrastination…but yes, I’m hoping I can get through quite a bit of my planned garments πŸ™‚

  4. I make so many pictures and list for clothes for the kids and I that it’s kind of absurd. But I think it relaxes me and helps me narrow down what we need and what I want to really make out of a fabric. The other day we were at the kids museum and while the kids were playing I was drawing out outfits on the chalkboard table I was sitting at. Why not?!?! πŸ™‚

    1. Oh, I’m with you Kristi! Drawing sketches of clothes is one of my favorite pastimes! That’s awesome that you drew outfits on a chalkboard table πŸ™‚

  5. All your art is so lovely! I’m a huge list maker, but your picture lists are much more fun. I do make plans for each season, although my plans tend to be overly ambitious. I’m trying to be particularly realistic this fall and make the most-needed items first and not get distracted or sidetracked by other fun projects that pop up. We’ll see if I succeed! I look forward to seeing your plan in action in the coming weeks. Have you made similar plans for K’s fall wardrobe?

    1. I’m an ambitious list-maker too – no wonder I always feel overwhelmed! I do make plans for K’s seasonal wardrobe too, though I change my mind a lot more with her clothes for some reason. Good luck with your list!

  6. I really love this idea! My spring/summer wardrobe is in need to an overhaul. It’s not like I don’t have any clothes – it’s just that I have that very bad habit of buying or making one thing, and not having that other thing to go with it. I am sure I’m not the only one πŸ™‚ Having a sketch like this must make the planning process so much simpler and cost efficient!

    1. I’m a visual person so these types of sketched plans help me a lot! I have a lot of RTW clothes, so I also try to keep in mind what I can make that would work with what I already own. I hope it does make it more cost-efficient, that would be fabulous πŸ™‚

  7. I love your sketch! I started making sewing plans this year and posting them on my blog, which makes me really stick to them. I’ve really loved making the plans. It also helps me use up my stash fabrics and finish what I’ve started.

    1. Thanks Beth! I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again: I love your mood boards and DIY outfit posts. πŸ™‚ You feature such fun outfits and it’s great how you find patterns to re-create the look.

    1. That’s great! We’re wardrobe soul mates! I really need to branch out and try to sew with different colors, just to expand my horizons I think. πŸ™‚
