Happy Friday + Randomness

Happy Friday! A little illustration I made for a friend – I FINALLY started making progress on the custom illustrations and will start shipping them out over the next few weeks. Note to self: learn how to under-promise and over-deliver instead of the other way around.

This illo reminded me of how, late last night, our neighbor texted me for help. A bird mysteriously appeared in her house and was flapping wildly around in her bedroom. The odd part is that nothing was open — no doors, no windows, no vents. I sent M over to settle the matter, and though they weren’t able to identify the fowl, it looked a little like a crow (but with brownish-orange markings) and was big! M maneuvered the enigmatic bird out the front door with a broom and all was well.

Friends, I have to share this adorable Powerpoint that K made (I wanted to keep the voiceover, but the file got too big so screen shots only):

Slide1 Slide2 Slide3 Slide4 Slide5

It may not be riveting content for those of you not passionate about frogs as K is, and I wish you could hear her voice because it really makes the presentation. And that last slide! Killed me. She made the whole thing herself, including figuring out how to do the voiceover. It wasn’t even a school assignment – she did it purely for fun.

Have a wonderful, wonderful weekend!

February’s done
I better be careful or
the year will fly by*

*What??? It can’t be March already! One of my big goals for 2015 is to be more present (even though it makes me squirmy to type those words — I have weird issues with a lot of words/phrases) and I clearly have my work cut out for me. Speaking of being present, I checked this book out from the library as an afterthought since K wanted to stay longer to read, and I ended up loving it. I finished it last night and parts of it made me cry. I hope to be a wise American one day.

  1. K’s powerpoint is awesome. So professional. I thought you might be interested in this bird website that I enjoy. The camera is watching a mother owl and her 2 owlets. landingsbirdcam.com

    1. Oh that’s so cool! When I checked the little owlets out, their mama was out hunting and they looked very cold in the windy, bustling treetops…I’ll have to share this one with K! Thank you, Greta 🙂

    1. Oh, so glad it taught you something. I think K’s a natural though I’m her mother so of course I would think that 🙂 Thank you, Denise!

  2. Good morning, Sanae! That’s a beautiful illustration that you did. I love it! It’s odd about the bird in your neighbour’s house though.

Your daughter’s presentation is awesome. The passion kids feel, the intense focus – awesome #2!

    Have a lovely weekend!

    1. The “fowl moment” as my neighbor and I dubbed it was truly weird! But all’s well that ends well and thank you for your kind words about my illustrations and K’s presentation. It’s nice to get back into my watercolors again. Hope you had a lovely weekend too!

  3. That powerpoint is FANTASTIC! She’s a really bright one, your girl 🙂 And, thanks for the book recommendation – I’ve requested it from my local library 😉

  4. I’m just delighted that Powerpoint lives on! I thought the kids of today would be post-powerpoint. 🙂
She’s done a great job. Nice reminder to wear gloves!!
I’m very excited about the illustration, that will be like a Birthday/Christmas/Valentine combo gift!

    1. Right? I was surprised to learn that she’s actually putting together a powerpoint in class too, but she’s become so enamored with it, she’s been creating her own presentations for the sheer joy of it. Now who would have ever thought I would write joy and powerpoint in the same sentence? Yes, I’m in illustration mode!! Thanks, Shelley!

  5. I remember you saying that you give a great PP presentation- so that’s sweet and hilarious that K felt motivated to make one on her own! Kids’ passions blow me away- so pure and in the moment. And that bird- i really have a thing for birds painted or drawn. Lovely.

    1. It’s been a long time since I’ve given a presentation and I’m sure my skills have atrophied at this point, but man, K’s got the magic touch! Thanks, Gita!

  6. More than I ever thought I would learn about fire-bellied toads! And what an engaging way to learn it from your tech-savvy girl:)
Loved the story of M coming to your neighbors rescue. A similar incidence happened here two summers ago, except in our case it was a BAT!! And to make it even more fun to expel from our home, my husband was on crutches with a broken ankle and so it rested on me – the only other adult – to solve the problem. Eek! Luckily, there was more laughter (slightly hysteric) than shrieks:) I’m sure your neighbor was very grateful for M’s chivralry!

    1. K loves her some Powerpoint! Wow, a bat!!! I wouldn’t have been able to handle that one – what a good friend you are, Lucinda :-).

  7. Hi Sanae!
    What a lovely drawing.
And a fab ppt presentation. I especially love the last slide – the charge/exhortation to anyone with a living creature in their care. You must be very proud!

    1. That’s my favorite slide too! We’re going to be taking care of a friend’s guinea pig starting today and this will officially Mark the very first time I’ve ever had multiple pets in my house! Thank you, Jenny!
