Olive Oil Cake

May 22, 2013

After making the pseudo-healthy chocolate chip cookies, I've been wondering what to do with the leftover almond flour. Then I saw this recipe via Cup of Jo, and I had my answer. I'd never tried olive oil cake before, have you? It's very interesting. I used meyer lemons as suggested and even with half a cup of the juice, the taste is very subtle - complex, even. I think I may have used an olive oil that wasn't mild enough though. When I took the first bite, I paused, thinking "whoa, ... Read more

Parmesan Garlic Quinoa

May 14, 2013

I've noticed that more and more lately, I like to pin unconventional dishes to my "Yummies" board. I see cauliflower tortillas and my interest is piqued. Or pasta with burrata and kale-roasted garlic sauce - I have no idea what burrata is, but I really want to make this. In fact, the more mysterious-sounding the dish, the more likely I am to add it to my already overflowing board. Now, parmesan garlic quinoa doesn't sound all that exotic. But what sold me was the claim that "you'll never eat ... Read more

Slightly Healthier Chocolate Chip Cookies + A Birth Story

May 7, 2013

I got to bake this past weekend, but it was more of an experiment, really. I debated whether to post this recipe since I kind of threw it together and it is very much in the testing phase, but M and K loved the cookies so much I thought it would be worth recording here. There was also the challenge that they are not the most appetizing looking cookies... When I opened my cupboard, I saw a chocolate chip cookie recipe on the side of an unopened package of white whole wheat flour, and I ... Read more

Fruit Smoothie

April 23, 2013

As a die-hard coffee drinker, sometimes I don't get quite enough of the other kinds of healthier liquids into my system. To remedy that, I've been making smoothies lately. I toss in whatever I have on hand - for this particular one, I used strawberries, frozen peaches, frozen blueberries, a banana, and a generous splash of coconut milk. On another occasion, I threw in some kale, which added pretty green flecks but no kale taste. Do you make smoothies? Is there a combination you ... Read more

Coconut Bread

April 9, 2013

When I made the granola last week, I ended up with a lot of extra shredded coconut. I tossed the bag into the fridge and yesterday morning, as I was rummaging for something that wasn't cheddar bunnies to put in K's lunch, I paused at the sight of so much coconut. I powered up my ipad and skimmed through my go-to cooking site (where the granola recipe originated as well), and voila, three posts in, a recipe for coconut bread! And I conveniently had all the ingredients in the house. It felt ... Read more

The word that incites terror in most newbie sewing The word that incites terror in most newbie sewing enthusiasts: zippers. Now that I have a few years of sewing under my belt I’m less cowed by them, but there’s something about long, separating zippers that still makes me nervous. I powered through, however, and made this versatile twill hooded jacket originating from a @patterncouture_ zip-up hoodie pattern meant for knit fabrics that I modified a lot. I blogged about it! Link in bio if you’d like to see the different versions I created.

To skip zippers altogether and make a truly summery garment, swipe and check out my NEW @creativebug Tiered Dress class (link also in bio!). Back to sewing more hot weather stuff because I’m going to Japan for a special trip next week! 🇯🇵🇯🇵
