For starters, I didn&#8217;t use any cherries since I&#8217;ve overloaded on the fruit in Michigan so I&#8217;m avoiding them for the time being. I also omitted the toasted coconuts, mainly because I forgot to get some.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sanaeishida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/breakfast-bars3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-5227\" title=\"breakfast-bars3\" src=\"http:\/\/sanaeishida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/breakfast-bars3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sanaeishida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/breakfast-bars3.jpg 800w, https:\/\/sanaeishida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/breakfast-bars3-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When I went to our local natural foods market to gather the less mainstream ingredients like brown rice puffed cereal, almond butter and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lundberg.com\/products\/syrup.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">brown rice syrup<\/a>, I noticed a package of <a title=\"millet puffs\" href=\"http:\/\/shop.naturespath.com\/Millet-Puffs\/p\/NPA-620020&amp;c=NaturesPath@EcoPacs\" target=\"_blank\">millet puffs<\/a> which I&#8217;d never tried before and it seemed like a good fit for the recipe. They&#8217;re round and cute and puffy, what&#8217;s not to love?<\/p>\n<p>And instead of using brown rice puffed cereal, which has a lot of corn syrup and maple syrup and such, I got <a href=\"http:\/\/shop.naturespath.com\/Rice-Puffs\/p\/NPA-620013&amp;c=NaturesPath@EcoPacs\" target=\"_blank\">plain puffed rice<\/a> with no added sugar. My version includes golden raisins, dried cranberries, sunflower seeds, raw whole almonds, cashews and pistachios.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sanaeishida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/breakfast-bars4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-5228\" title=\"breakfast-bars4\" src=\"http:\/\/sanaeishida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/breakfast-bars4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"562\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sanaeishida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/breakfast-bars4.jpg 800w, https:\/\/sanaeishida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/breakfast-bars4-300x210.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The whole things came together easily and quickly, and I popped the pan into the fridge eager to cut them up and have a Martha moment with twine and parchment paper.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sanaeishida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/breakfast-bars5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-5229\" title=\"breakfast-bars5\" src=\"http:\/\/sanaeishida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/breakfast-bars5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sanaeishida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/breakfast-bars5.jpg 800w, https:\/\/sanaeishida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/breakfast-bars5-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>They look like yummy breakfast bars, don&#8217;t they? Sadly, I was too enthusiastic with the puffed elements, it seems, and the bars are rather&#8230;squishy. Not chewy, but squishy. Instead of hardening, the syrup mixture got absorbed into the puffs, resulting in sponginess.<\/p>\n<p>They still taste delicious if you can get beyond the texture, and I like that the brown rice syrup adds a lighter sweet touch. The key is less puff and more nuts and dried fruits. Lesson learned. I would recommend that you follow the recipe ingredients ratio exactly as posted <a href=\"http:\/\/madebygirl.blogspot.com\/2013\/06\/food-cherry-pistachio-coconut-breakfast.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>, rather than trying the toss-&#8217;em-and-see-what-happens method I utilized.
