The lovely An of <a href=\"http:\/\/straight-grain.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Straightgrain<\/a> nominated me for the Liebster Award and you can read her post <a href=\"http:\/\/straight-grain.blogspot.com\/2013\/01\/liebster-blog-award.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> (which is awesome and I&#8217;m so flattered). Since the word &#8221;Liebster&#8221; translates to something like &#8220;dearest&#8221; in German, it seemed to be in keeping with my general valentine&#8217;s theme this week. I&#8217;ve been tasked with answering several questions, and just for kicks, I doodled a few quick illustrations &#8211; thought it might break up the very long answers a bit. I am a voracious reader. I go through 2 to 5 books a week and will read anything, though I&#8217;ve been having a Scandinavian noir mysteries moment lately. At least I used to read books until I got <a href=\"http:\/\/store.apple.com\/us\/browse\/home\/shop_ipad?afid=p219%7CGOUS&amp;cid=AOS-US-KWG\" target=\"_blank\">this<\/a> for Christmas. Now I&#8217;m on Pinterest 24 hours a day. Kidding. More like 20 hours a day. I was born and raised in Los Angeles. It&#8217;s true that you will run into celebrities all the time in L.A. I did literally that in a Borders bookstore and knocked out several books from Whoopi Goldberg&#8217;s arms. Whoopi was not pleased. Whoopi would also probably not be pleased with the drawing I did of her because it looks nothing like her.<\/p>\n<p>3. I have eerily short pinkies. Weird things happen to me all the time. A crow landed on my head not once, but on <em>three<\/em> separate occasions. I&#8217;m not sure what this says about the state of my hair. One time, a woman dropped her purse from an escalator three stories up in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.westfield.com\/sanfrancisco\" target=\"_blank\">mall<\/a>\u00a0and it landed on my head. I could go on and on, but things seem to happen to my head a lot.<\/p>\n<p>5. I am a good listener (I trained as a crisis counselor in college and have a degree in counseling), but I&#8217;m horrible at being witty and coming up with clever things to say on the fly. My husband jokes that it usually takes me a week to think of a comeback. He&#8217;s very witty so our repartees are quite one-sided.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sanaeishida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/elementaryschools1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1958\" title=\"elementaryschools\" src=\"http:\/\/sanaeishida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/elementaryschools1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sanaeishida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/elementaryschools1.jpg 800w, https:\/\/sanaeishida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/elementaryschools1-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>6. I went to five elementary schools. I never quite understood why my parents moved around so much, but as a result I am highly adaptable yet cling desperately to routine. A paradox.<\/p>\n<p>7. I visited a friend in New Zealand many years ago and went bungee jumping. A word of advice: learn from me and don&#8217;t wear contacts or a white t-shirt when bungee jumping.<\/p>\n<p>8. I don&#8217;t like watching or reading about current events\/news. They make me really sad in a way that books don&#8217;t, and I stopped about ten years ago. People are always shocked at how uninformed I am. I am a night owl and can&#8217;t go to sleep before 2am. When I was teaching English and living in Japan many, many moons ago, I went to a strange birthday party where the main event was arm wrestling. I beat out all the dainty Japanese men and was crowned champion. At last count, I have had 25 jobs. I should do a series of posts because some of them were hilarious. One of my faves was when I was in high school and worked as a stock girl at Nordstrom during the Christmas season. A sales girl came into the stock room in a panic and asked if anyone knew how to puffy paint because there was a monogram event going on but the monogrammer was a no-show. I tentatively raised my hand. Word spread that an Asian girl could draw anything with puffy paint and people were smuggling in t-shirts from JC Penney&#8217;s for me to customize. I had a line out the door!! Good times.<\/p>\n<p>***************************************************************************<\/p>\n<p>And here are the answers to An&#8217;s questions:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. What music do you play while sewing (if any)?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>I don&#8217;t listen to music while sewing, but always have something from Netflix or Hulu Plus on. I have watched all three seasons of Glee these last few weeks and am starting on season 2 of Downton Abbey.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Name one trend in children&#8217;s clothing which you absolutely adore.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>I&#8217;ve been noticing a lot of metallic touches in kid&#8217;s clothes, which I love. I&#8217;m all about subtle bling.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Name one trend in children&#8217;s clothing which you absolutely dislike.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>I don&#8217;t think it&#8217;s a trend per se, but I don&#8217;t like bikinis for little girls. Even though tiny bikinis are adorable, they make me a little uncomfortable.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Is there a sewing-related mistake you keep making, over and over again?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Oh my goodness, so many! I&#8217;m always messing up bias facings and am constantly attaching pieces the wrong way because I forget to mark the wrong side.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>5. Name your 5 favorite sewing blogs.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Only 5?? That&#8217;s a tough one. I&#8217;m fairly new to the sewing playground\/blogosphere and am discovering wonderful sewing blogs every day. I couldn&#8217;t narrow them down to 5 so here are the top 7 that I check daily for posts though there are many, many more:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/straight-grain.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Straightgrain<\/a> &#8211; An has a tremendous talent for finding great fabrics and creating adorable patterns. I love seeing her super darling daughter in all her delightful sewn projects!<\/em><br \/>\n<em><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lbg-studio.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">LBG Studios<\/a> &#8211; A recent discovery, and I&#8217;m in awe of Vanessa&#8217;s sense of style and fantastic photography skills!<\/em><br \/>\n<em><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/skirtastop.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Skirt As Top<\/a>: Kristin is the super sewist\/sew-er\/sewing genius. She is technically savvy (sewvvy?), amazing with presentation and tutorials, and awesome with pattern\/fabric match-ups. And have you seen her latest <a href=\"http:\/\/skirtastop.com\/2013\/01\/31\/film-petit-ferris-buellers-day-off\/\" target=\"_blank\">Film Petit<\/a>!!?? So fabulous.<\/em><br \/>\n<em><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/nestedinstitches.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Nested in Stitches<\/a> &#8211; Robin has a lovely aesthetic (very Japanese! my favorite kind!) and has incredible sewing skills. The way she matches plaids&#8230;perfection. She&#8217;s also a wealth of helpful and inspiring resources.<\/em><br \/>\n<em><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/deliacreates.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Delia Creates<\/a> &#8211; Love Delia! Gorgeous photography, uber stylish kids clothes, unique and beautifully presented tutorials, and the most accommodating and attractive models I&#8217;ve ever seen.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/probablyactually.wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Probably Actually<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; Modern yet classic, with a lot of sweetness thrown in. There&#8217;s also something very soothing about her writing, and I revisit her old entries a lot.<\/em><br \/>\n<em><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/youandmie.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">You and Mie<\/a> &#8211; Cherie rocks and has, arguably, the most adorable little girl who makes the already terrific outfits look like haute couture. And Cherie&#8217;s tutorials are so clear, thorough and well-done!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I think what strikes me most about the sewing community is how <strong>nice<\/strong> everyone is.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>6. Which celebrity should start sewing and blogging about it, and why?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Hands down, Gwyneth Paltrow. I secretly want to be her. Can&#8217;t you just see her sewing for Apple and Moses and posting stuff onto Goop?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>7. What is the nicest compliment you ever received on your creations?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Hmmm. Maybe &#8220;K has the best wardrobe&#8221;?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>8. What is the most dubious compliment you ever received on your creations?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>I don&#8217;t think I&#8217;ve received any dubious compliments, but I do get asked to hem jeans and curtains, which I&#8217;m not so thrilled about.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>9. What are your favorite online fabric shops?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>I don&#8217;t actually buy fabric online since I like to feel the texture and see the prints up close. I&#8217;m pretty lucky to live in Seattle where we have some great fabric stores.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>10. What is the best sewing tip you ever got?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Your seam ripper is your best friend.&#8221; It&#8217;s so true and I find that I don&#8217;t mind taking apart seams.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>11. What is the best blogging tip you could ever give?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>As someone with a very new blog with very few followers, I feel a bit presumptuous to give any blogging tips. I would say that my life-long journaling habit has come in very handy for blogging and as I&#8217;m sure you&#8217;ve all heard or read elsewhere from more legit folks, I also think it&#8217;s important to be yourself and to be truly interested in what you&#8217;re blogging about.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>As for my own nominations&#8230;I need help! Friends, do you know of fantastic newer and up-and-coming blogs I could nominate that haven&#8217;t already been?
