Both K and M came down with the sniffles in the last few weeks and I&#8217;ve been impervious to the germs (knocking furiously on wood as I type this).<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s talk about this year&#8217;s advent calendar shall we? However. To start with, the time commitment was obvious &#8212; that&#8217;s a lot of cutting and folding and gluing. I don&#8217;t have one of those handy dandy Silhouette or Cricut machines and had no interest in owning one. Since I tend to procrastinate, I would come up with a different idea at the last minute every year.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-16912\" src=\"http:\/\/sanaeishida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/2018-adventcalendar8.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"780\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sanaeishida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/2018-adventcalendar8.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/sanaeishida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/2018-adventcalendar8-300x234.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sanaeishida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/2018-adventcalendar8-845x659.jpg 845w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For whatever reason, this year I was on top of things. Not only did I plan out the project three weeks in advance, but I even designed the houses <em>myself<\/em>. I know. Crazy. I was going to download a bunch of free online templates but when I saw how basic the shapes were, I figured it would be easy for me to customize my own. I spent an afternoon designing and voila, I had 8 templates.<\/p>\n<p>I spent maybe an hour or two a day working on the calendar for a couple of weeks. I printed the houses on my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dickblick.com\/products\/strathmore-artist-inkjet-papers\/?clickTracking=true&amp;wmcp=pla&amp;wmcid=items&amp;wmckw=12954-1012&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQiArqPgBRCRARIsAPwlHoVfIAiZX4ZOGi2M7pC_MGiUXum7hnSjW-RFgZiRWQCssYimDiKZro4aAqE2EALw_wcB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">usual inkjet textured paper<\/a>, of which I seem to have an endless supply. I printed three of each template for a total of 24 houses. Then I sliced out the windows and doors with an Exacto knife but used regular scissors to cut out the houses. For scoring the sections that would be folded, I used a Japanese <em>hera<\/em>, which is actually a marking tool for sewing. I don&#8217;t like to get messy, so I got these <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Glue-Dots-Contains-Adhesive-32794-300\/dp\/B000WWK5L0\/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1544120752&amp;sr=8-4&amp;keywords=mini+glue+dots\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mini glue dots<\/a>, which were perfect.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-16913\" src=\"http:\/\/sanaeishida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/2018-adventcalendar9.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"750\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sanaeishida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/2018-adventcalendar9.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/sanaeishida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/2018-adventcalendar9-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sanaeishida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/2018-adventcalendar9-845x634.jpg 845w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/>Now, I typically design the advent calendars in a count-down style.
